New Release: Between Ghosts by Garret Leigh

Title: Between Ghosts

Author: Garret Leigh

Publisher/GR Link: Riptide, GR

Genre: MM Contemporary

Vice: War, Military

Rating: 4 stars

Lock this book up: 3 keys.  The sex is hot and fits the story

Length: Novel

Satisfaction: HEA

Cover Impressions: I like it.

Best Line:  "Nat shivered, exposed and laid bare, but for the first time in his life he didn’t give a shit. “I’m okay. It’s just being with you, like this, I can’t hide . . . from you, from anything.”

Synopsis: In 2003, journalist Connor Regan marched through London to add his voice to a million others, decrying the imminent invasion of Iraq. Eight months later, his brother, James, was killed in action in Mosul.

Three years on, Connor finds himself bound for Iraq to embed with an elite SAS team. He sets his boots on the ground looking for closure and solace—anything to ease the pain of his brother’s death. Instead he finds Sergeant Nathan Thompson.

Nat Thompson is a veteran commander, hardened by years of combat and haunted by the loss of his best friend. Being lumbered with a civilian is a hassle Nat doesn’t need, and he vows to do nothing more than keep the hapless hack from harm’s way.

But Connor proves far from hapless, and too compelling to ignore for long. He walks straight through the steel wall Nat’s built around his heart, and when their mission puts him in mortal danger, Nat must lay old ghosts to rest and fight to the death for the only man he’s ever truly loved.

Impressions:  I always love Garret Leigh’s work and I was very excited to read her latest release.  I felt very connected to Connor right from the start, and I could immediately feel his connection to Nat.  I really liked seeing some of Nat’s view of their connection, and as the novel progressed I felt that both of those pieces worked very well together to give us a full sense of the story and a perspective on their deepening feelings.

I found the military aspect to this story to be fascinating and very believable.  I hadn’t known much about the military experiences of British soldiers, and I found the combat scenes gripping and gritty.  Leigh must have done the necessary research because I was completely pulled into the story, and I found myself itching to get back to my kindle!

The love in this story is a slow burn with periods of explosive sexual energy, which is appropriate to the situation.  Leigh can write a heart wrencher, and though this book was still filled with emotion, it was about men at war, literally fighting for their lives.  There isn’t a lot of sentimentality allowed in those situations, and I am glad that the love story really suited the setting and context.

Despite the gritty setting, this story centers around two men who find each other and get the love and closure that they both have been needing.  I loved every page, and I was sorry when it was over!

Highly recommended.

Vice: Marines, OFY, Opposites attract

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Lock this book up: 3 keys.  The sex was hot and supported the story.

Length: Novel

Satisfaction: HEA

Cover Impressions: Adorable!

Best Line: "If this is a dream, I hope we sleep for a long time."

SynopsisAn unexpected inheritance lands Jeremy a large house and plenty of money to take a sabbatical from his job teaching poetry at a small college. He intends to sell the house and take off on a new path to discover what he wants out of life. Then he meets Connor. The attraction he feels to a man so different from himself is no less shocking than his change in financial circumstances, but Connor is in the closet and Jeremy wants a life lived out in the sun.

Connor is a former Force Recon Marine who runs a housecleaning business. When he’s hired to get Jeremy’s house market-ready, he’s startled by how attracted he is to his client despite their many differences. But his past, especially his final mission, weighs heavily on him. He’s not certain he can be the man Jeremy needs, but no man has ever made him want to take a risk like Jeremy does.

Impressions:  This was a cute, sexy and fun read.  Continuing my journey of reading books about butch men wising up to the cute gay boys in front of them, Coming Clean was a perfect book to extend this trend.

This was definitely a light read, and it was exactly what I wanted and needed!  There are books that deal with the darkness of PTSD, or the struggles of coming out in a way that is full of angst, but this book focuses on the love between these two men, and on Connor's awakening.  I loved watching Jeremy and Connor fall in love, and I wanted to curl up and lock the world away as these guys figured out the things they would sacrifice to be together.

If you want a great read that is light on angst and heavy on romance, grab this one today!

Everything Changes, by Melanie Hansen

Title: Everything Changes

Author:  Melanie Hansen

Publisher/GR LinkDreamspinnerGoodreads

Genre: MM Contemporary

Vice: Military, PTSD, GFY, OFY

Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Lock this book up: 4 keys, the sex is hot and moves the story

Length: Novel

Satisfaction: HEA

Cover Impressions: I love it.  Captures the feel of the book.

Best Line: "Everything that he and Carey had gone through, separately and together, had brought them to this point, and Jase knew with a fiery certainty that it had all been worth it."

Synopsis:What happens when friendship catches fire?

Former Marine and lower-leg amputee Carey Everett keeps a grueling schedule of counseling fellow war veterans and their families. The injury he received in Afghanistan forces him to rely on a reserve of strength he didn’t even know he had. A much deserved vacation will let him reconnect with his best friend, who saved his life and has been there for him through devastating injury and painful recovery.

Part-time EMT and aspiring singer Jase DeSantis has been in love with Carey for years, but he’s come to accept that his straight friend will never be able to offer more. Jase fills his days with band rehearsals, ambulance shifts, and willing groupies, all while trying to cope with debilitating PTSD.

A week of sun, fun, and music in San Diego changes Jase and Carey’s lives forever when their relationship takes an unexpected turn. Jase has been longing for that change, but it leaves Carey reeling with confusion. As Jase fights to hold things together, Carey deals with doubts, fears, and his own preconceived notions about labels and the true nature of love.

Impressions: I love a good GFY/OFY novel, and throw in some military guys? and a disabled hero?!  Sign me up!  I was not let down at all!

This is an impressive new release by a first time author, and I can promise I'll be checking out her books to come!  I really loved this book, and the sensitive way that Hansen handled the MC's and their own challenges.

This novel tackles the issues of both PTSD and falling in love.  Both Jase and Carey suffer from PTSD, and I thought this was handled with grace and care.  Though these men have reals struggles, they are not victims, and that made them both immensely likable.

Both men are three dimensional, and I really appreciated that Jase wasn't made into a perfect hero just waiting for Carey to come around.  Carey had to come to term with his new views of himself, and I liked that this wasn't a story where a gay guy chases a "straight" guy across scores of pages.

The love that developed between these two men was a astral extension of their friendship, love and respect for each other.  It felt natural and believable.  I loved watching these two men figure out how much they needed each other, and I found myself easily lost in their lives.

This is a highly recommended read!  You will not want to miss it!
